Twice a month, chatting with radio host Romina Andreoli, I unpack key events shaping the African political landscape and their impact on regional and global dynamics. Also economic trends, humanitarian crises, health challenges, and efforts to address poverty, hunger and gender inequality.
Recent topics: coups in West Africa, jihadi insurgencies, South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, the Wagner group, Russia’s rising influence, BRICS, debt and trade with China, COVID-19, contested elections, impact of the war in Ukraine, pope Francis visits the DRC, and how South Africa fights mountain fires.
CYCLONE IDAI
When cyclone Idai devastated central Mozambique in March 2019, I worked as coordinator for community engagement with the CDAC network. A big part of my work was helping community radios to start transmitting again (see photo story).
Another rewarding task was creating with graphic designer Zacarias Chemane a series of posters against sexual abuse around humanitarian aid (below).
The network CDAC – Communicating with Disaster-Affected Communities – comprises more than 30 key relief actors, including UN, NGO and private sector members.
When the humanitarian response is informed by and adapts to the views, perceptions and priorities of affected communities, it becomes more effective and accountable.
